Stanislaus River Juvenile Chinook Outmigration Update                               February 2, 2007

January 8-28, 2007, Summary Postcard No. 1

Caswell:

The traps were installed on January 9th at Caswell State Park (RM 8) (Figure 1).  We began intermittent sampling on January 10th at the same sampling site as previous years (Figure 2).  We started sampling 7 days a week on January 22nd. We plan to continue sampling 7 days a week to increase our sample size for coded-wire tagging (CWT) juvenile Chinook and to conduct almost daily trap efficiency tests.

Figure 2. Caswell rotary screw traps first day of sampling, January 10th.

A total of 37 juvenile Chinook salmon were captured between January 9th and January 28th.  Daily catch ranged from 0 to 11 Chinook.  Individual forklengths ranged from 29 mm to 39 mm.  Mean length for captured chinook during this sample period was 33.5 mm and mean weight was 0.4 grams.

Zero O. mykiss were captured in the rotary screw trap during this sample period.

Trap efficiency tests will be conducted when daily chinook catch produces a sufficient sample size.

Coded-wire tagging (CWT):

The CWT mobile laboratory (CWT trailer) will be finished and positioned at Caswell on February 2nd.  A third rotary screw trap (Lower Trap) was installed about 300 yards below the original Caswell trapping site (Figure 3).  This trap will be used to increase the number of Chinook caught at Caswell and subsequently tagged.  Jerry Big Eagle & Associates will be assisting us during our tagging efforts in February.  Please review the final Detailed Study Plan for Coded Wire Tagging of Chinook Salmon in The Stanislaus River for more information on the CWT study.

In the lower Caswell trap a total of 8 juvenile Chinook salmon were captured between January 9th and January 28th.  Daily catch ranged from 0 to 6 Chinook.  Individual forklengths ranged from 29 mm to 35 mm.  Mean length for captured chinook during this sample period was 32.3 mm and mean weight was 0.3 grams.

Zero O. mykiss were captured in the lower rotary screw trap during this sample period.

Environmental Data:

Instantaneous water temperature taken at the Caswell rotary screw trap ranged between 44.5°F and 47.6°F.  Turbidity at Caswell ranged from 0.7 NTU to 1.4 NTU.  During the sampling period releases from Goodwin Dam ranged between 1,010 cfs and 1,209 cfs.  Flows at Orange Blossom Bridge (OBB; RM 46.9) ranged from 793 cfs and 945 cfs and at Ripon (RIP; RM 15.8) from 1,010 cfs and 1,153 cfs.
