January 29-February 11, 2007, Summary
Postcard No.
2
Caswell:
A total of 21
juvenile Chinook salmon were captured from January 29th
to February 11th. Daily catch ranged
from 0 to 7 Chinook. Individual forklengths ranged
from 31 mm to 38 mm. Mean length for
captured Chinook during this sampling period was 35 mm
and mean weight was 0.4 grams (Figure 1).

Zero O. mykiss
were captured in the rotary screw trap during this
sampling period.
Trap
efficiency tests will be conducted when daily Chinook catch
produces sufficient sample sizes.
During the
sampling period eight incidental species were captured, including white catfish, bluegill sunfish, tule perch, riffle sculpin,
hardhead, Sacramento sucker, western mosquitofish, and
unidentified lamprey (Figure 2).

Coded Wire Tagging (CWT):
The CWT mobile
laboratory (CWT trailer) was completed and positioned at
Caswell State Park (RM 8) on February 7th (Figure 3).
A variety of theft and/or vandalism deterrents were
completed, and details and photos will be provided in the next
summary.
Please review the final
Detailed Study Plan for Coded Wire Tagging of Chinook Salmon
in The Stanislaus River
for more information on the
CWT study.
The CWT trailer was not operational during this sampling
period due to a few technical difficulties, so no Chinook
were tagged.
However, catch numbers are currently low. The trailer
will be fully operational by February 16th and tagging will
begin as daily catch numbers are expected to increase in the
next few weeks.

In the lower
Caswell trap (Figure 4) a total of 2 juvenile Chinook
salmon were captured from January 29th
to February 11th. Daily catch ranged
from 0 to 1 Chinook. Individual forklengths ranged
from 34 mm to 37 mm. Mean length for collected Chinook
during this sampling period was 36 mm and mean weight was 0.4 grams.

were captured in the lower rotary screw trap during this
sampling period.
Environmental
Data:
Instantaneous water
temperature taken at the Caswell rotary screw trap ranged
from 46.0°F to 50.5°F. Turbidity at Caswell ranged
from 0.9 NTU to 2.2 NTU. During the sampling period
releases from Goodwin Dam ranged from 802 cfs to 1,007 cfs.
Flows at Orange Blossom Bridge (OBB; RM 46.9) ranged from
631 cfs to 792 cfs and at Ripon (RIP; RM 15.8) from 803 cfs
to 996 cfs.
