March 26 - April 8, 2007, Summary Postcard No. 5

Caswell:

A total of 60 juvenile Chinook salmon were captured at Caswell Memorial State Park between March 26th and April 8th increasing the season total to 981.  Daily catch ranged from 2 to 11 Chinook.  Individual fork lengths ranged from 50 mm to 125 mm (Figure 1).  Mean length for captured Chinook during this sampling period was 76 mm and mean weight was 4.8 grams.

The contribution of the season total catch for each trap are 407 for the north trap, 343 for the south trap, and 231 for the lower trap.  The lower trap captured 20 of the 60 juvenile Chinook salmon yielding 33% of the total catch for the sampling period and 24% of the total catch for the season thus far (Figure 2).

Figure 2. Total daily catch contributions of the north, south, and lower rotary screw traps at Caswell Memorial State Park (RM 8). To date the lower trap has contributed 24% of the total catch.

Four O. mykiss were captured in the north rotary screw trap during this sampling period. (Figure 3, Table 1).

No efficiency tests were conducted during this sampling period due to a low sample size. During this sampling period twelve different types incidental species were captured, including: white catfish, bluegill sunfish, tule perch, prickly sculpin, hardhead, western mosquitofish, goldfish, Sacramento pikeminnow, unidentified lamprey, inland silverside, smallmouth bass and redeye bass. (Figure 4, Figure 5).
