Fisheries work is a lifestyle for Gloria Bourne. She brings years of
experience doing technical fisheries field work that varied by the
season for both the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and National
Marine Fisheries Service.
Background: Gloria Bourne is known for creating the
first library for Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. As the agency's
first librarian, she took great pride in building and managing a world
class fisheries library that included many rare and special historical
books, reports and pictures dating back to the mid-1800's. Those resources
documented the beginnings of US Bureau of Fisheries Commission (now the US
Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service) and the
start of the Oregon, California, and Washington State Fish and Game Commissions.
During the library project she accrued a large base of library contacts
and a client list from around the world that early on included Cramer
Fish Sciences.
In her career Gloria worked on fish tagging, egg and fry conservation and
sampling adult returns at Bonneville Fish Hatchery. Alternating seasons,
she monitored adult and juvenile fish passage and counted fish in the
underwater viewing windows at Bonneville Dam for NMFS.
"Before fish," as she puts it, Gloria
held diverse jobs including hospitality, commercial driving, and
appointments working for the US Army Corp of Engineers in downtown
Portland and the US Forest Service in Sweet Home, Oregon.

Personal: Gloria has lived on four different fish
hatcheries in the last 28 years and currently lives at Sandy Fish Hatchery.
Gloria and her husband Ken recently purchased their first home for
retirement in Woodburn, Oregon, after renting from the State for 30 years.
Their new home is right on the 14th green of the Senior Estates Golf Course,
and right in the middle of "Birdie Alley".
With their newly acquired golf
cart and no fee to golf, "It's not unusual for us to play 18 to 36 holes
in a day." After golfing, Gloria and Ken head for the large Jacuzzi and
Olympic sized swim pool. "If we hurry we can make the Saturday evening
dance where everyone turns out to 'strut their stuff'." |
