If you want to discuss fish and math at the same time, talk to
Brian Pyper. Your conversation could cover topics such as simulation modeling, Bayesian
statistics, advanced quantitative tools in simulation and empirical analyses
as well as lighter topics such as risk/decision analysis and theories of
experimental design.
Just to name a few.
Responsibilities: Brian brings to Cramer Fish Sciences particular expertise
in salmon population dynamics and simulation modeling, and broad experience
applying standard stock-assessment methods and evaluations of alternative
management policies for fish stocks.
He also has significant project experience analyzing data, models, and
management issues related to threatened populations of burbot and sturgeon.
Projects/Services: Brian is skilled in working with critical fisheries
issues like salmon population dynamics as well as evaluating alternative
management policies for fish stocks. He is experienced with
multivariate statistics, time-series analysis, Bayesian statistics,
risk/decision analysis, resampling methods, and theories of experimental
design, sampling, and mark-recapture.
Background: Brian, currently a Ph.D. candidate at the
University of Alaska, holds a Master of Natural Resource Management from
Simon Fraser University, and a bachelors degree in ecology from the
University of British Columbia.
He has enjoyed 15 years of interdisciplinary educational and work experience
in quantitative methods used in resource management, coauthored over a dozen
scientific journal papers, and has guest lectured at Simon Fraser University
and the University of Alaska Fairbanks on predator-prey and fleet dynamics,
Kalman filtering, Bayesian statistics, and decision analysis.
Personal:
Aside from the obligatory fondness for hiking, camping and all
things outdoors, Brian has recently become enamored with raising chickens.
"They have more personality than I expected, and sometimes, I even think
they understand what I'm saying." Cheap speak, indeed!
Future adventures also await Brian and his 1975 Dodge Camper Van.
"I know it's tough on gas and the environment, but Van still has
a lot of places to see."
